This Zwartbles/Exmoor Blueface blend top is one of the fibers brought in for the UK Breeds Fiber Chemistry set that were milled by John Arbon Textiles, a small family-run mill in the UK that I had the pleasure of supporting by bringing some of their tops here for spinners to sample. My supplies of these tops are very limited.
Mostly the dark brown of the Zwartbles fleece with swirls of the white Exmoor Blueface, this is a fluffy top that will make a beautiful heathered yarn. Zwartbles sheep were classified as critically rare until breeding in the UK brought their numbers back up over the past decade. Still primarily a milk and meat breed, their fleece is attracting more handspinners with its springiness and naturally almost-black color. The Exmoor Blueface breed is a cross between Exmoor Horn (a hill breed from north Devon) and Bluefaced Leicester sheep, and carries a lot of Bluefaced Leicester influence in its staple length and sturdiness while being a bit fluffier.
